What do you Know about Premature Ejaculation?
Premature ejaculation is a condition in which a man is unable to continue having sex for longer than two minutes.
Premature ejaculation tends to be a condition that comes and goes and is quite common, like many other types of Erectile Dysfunction. Premature ejaculation is still stigmatized, and many men are reluctant to talk to a doctor about it. The good news is that premature ejaculation doesn't tend to be permanent. And for those who suffer from long-term premature ejaculation, there are several effective medical treatments to help combat the issue.
How does ejaculation work?
The central nervous system controls ejaculation. When a man is sexually stimulated by sexual friction, signals are sent to the spinal cord and brain. When a man reaches a certain level of arousal, signals are sent from the brain to the genitals. This causes semen to be ejected through the penis, and this is called ejaculation.
Ejaculation occurs in two stages:
First stage:
This stage involves the process of sperm moving from the testicles to the prostate, releasing secretions from the prostate gland to form semen. The tubes help transport the sperm from the testicles through the prostate to the base of the penis.
Second stage:
Ejaculation occurs when the muscles at the base of the penis contract every 0.8 seconds. This forces the semen out of the penis in up to 5 spurts.
Causes of premature ejaculation:
To understand premature ejaculation and how to deal with it, it is important to be aware of its causes. The first thing to know is that there are two main types of premature ejaculation: Lifelong or acquired.
1- Lifelong premature ejaculation is a problem that has been present since becoming sexually active and is likely to be permanent.
2- Acquired premature ejaculation occurs later in life and is likely to be temporary.
Many different things cause premature ejaculation, and multiple factors frequently combine to lead to the condition. These factors tend to fall into psychological, genetic, physical, and lifestyle categories.
Psychological factors:
Psychological trauma surrounding sexual activity is thought to be a major cause of lifelong premature ejaculation, as is an upbringing that portrays sex as wrong or illegitimate.
Later in life, depression, stress, and anxiety can contribute to premature ejaculation. Problems in a sexual relationship and the increased anxiety that can surround sexual impotence are also major causes of premature ejaculation.
Genetic factors:
Men who have a father, brother, or son with premature ejaculation are thought to be more likely to suffer from the condition.
Physical causes:
Physical causes include increased sensitivity in the nerves of the penis, conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, prostate disease, hypertension, and hypo- or hyperthyroidism.
Lifestyle factors:
Excessive alcohol consumption is one of the unhealthiest habits that leads to premature ejaculation, but alcohol can also cause erectile dysfunction and delayed ejaculation as well.
How to treat premature ejaculation:
There may not be a magic cure for premature ejaculation, but the good news is that most of the factors mentioned above can be effectively managed with the right treatments.
Psychological causes such as depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, and emotional relationship issues are best addressed through counseling and pharmaceutical treatments.
